learn to play hockey for adults
SOC’s Beginner Hockey (BH) is a 12-week intro to ice hockey for adults with no prior experience. Our learn to play hockey for adults program is designed to teach newcomers how to skate, shoot, and enjoy the game in a fun, supportive, and safe environment.

Beginner Hockey (BH) is guided by experienced coaches and focuses on building a strong foundation. No skating background is required. The program starts with skating fundamentals and builds step-by-step toward full hockey gameplay. The final three sessions are real games played with your new teammates against other beginner teams.

The registration fee is $479 for players and $379 for goalies, which includes:

  • Gear orientation at United Cycle
  • 12 x 75-minute on-ice sessions
  • Your own team jersey & socks
  • Wrap-up social event

After the program, you can join a team within SOC’s CCRHL division to play against other beginner teams who’ve completed the same journey as you!

I moved to Canada a year ago and started watching hockey before I even arrived—getting into the Edmonton way of life. I planned to learn to skate in a year and play hockey in two. Eight months in, I’m already out there—maybe not McDavid yet, but definitely trying!

Take the leap this fall! Join countless other adults who started their hockey journey with us. We’ll handle the coaching — you just show up and play.

We’ve all been there—wondering if we’d be the worst on the ice, unsure of what to expect, and afraid of looking out of place. But with coaches who’ve been running this program for nearly a decade, you’ll be in good hands. They know how to make learning hockey both fun and unforgettable.

Still feeling unsure? Come out to one of our shinnies. You’ll see what hockey is really about, meet some of the coaches, and connect with people who were in your shoes just a few months ago.

I played everything but hockey growing up. After 53 years, I finally joined BH and found an amazing community. As a lifelong Oilers fan, I figured if I’m yelling at the TV, I should at least play. Now I’m yelling even more—loving the journey!

I never played sports growing up and couldn’t skate—my background was competitive bagpipes! When our daughters started ringette, I decided it was time to learn. I joined a learn-to-play program in fall 2023 and was instantly hooked. Learning to skate and play hockey alongside my husband has been an unexpected journey—and we’re loving every minute of it!
